We were first checked into the “facility” by a scientist attendant before being plunged into the dominion of Dr. Bloodborne himself, who immediately grilled us on whether we were up for the test and started probing our fears in a fantastic, personalized interaction, all while working his odd and intricate plasma ball machinery. From there, the characters kept approaching, with performers appearing from overhead, underneath, and seemingly every way. Physicality is a huge part of this haunt: expect to be pushed, dragged, shoved, and even gently pulled by the hair, so this is certainly one where you need to be prepared to get involved! There were also some dazzlingly unexpected moments of physical exertion, including actors practically appearing on ceilings and one particularly energetic character jumping onto the banister in the swamp room.
The costumes are equally imposing, with some characters covered from head to toe, such as the wonderfully creepy Grass People with their flowing flora. The Pig Men were very threatening, cornering us in the butchery before seeming to almost swarm to us, while a burlap-sack-wearing character got us genuinely bloody with the contents of his guts pail. The zombies were also very unsettling, as was one large gentleman who looked as though he could have physically picked us up (indeed, we’ve heard that he has in the past)! Mask work was consistently eerie, often when combined with full-body clothes, and every character felt as though they belonged to the world they occupied. With 64 actors in the labyrinth, the concentration of performers is insane, and it ensures that there is almost always something happening around you.
