Scoring Criteria Transition: 2026 sits right at a change in our review categories and weighting, so this score isn’t an apples-to-apples comparison to reviews from nearby years under different criteria; worth keeping in mind if you’re tracking a haunt’s rating over time.

Summary

We were so excited to be back at Walsall Scare Maze this year, having last crossed their threshold back in 2023. A lot has changed since then: the main haunt, “Lock 13: The Observers” plunges you into a deadly heritage tour beneath the apparently perfect village of Rookmere, only to end up trapped in the underground canal tunnels. An immersive theatrical experience is also available with “Amelia’s Attic: The Fear Experiment” filled with illusions and stage magic (but we won’t spoil any of the surprises here!). The main arena has also undergone a revamp, with the Rookmere Village aesthetic spilling… Read More…

We found it very easy to find more information about Walsall Scare Maze before attending, with the website listing a comprehensive FAQ, including dress code and disclaimers. Parking is perhaps the only slight hurdle, as there is limited on-street parking outside; however, paid parking facilities are located nearby. The maze features a large, imposing sign making it easy to find from the street itself, and once inside the layout is intuitive. Walsall Scare Maze’s team are excellent, and the site runs incredibly professionally. We were met with friendly smiles and helpful instructions and really felt well looked after throughout our… Read More…

There are two sets of external designs which prepare you for the frights within Walsall Scare Maze. First, on the street, a large and clear sign marks the entrance clearly, whilst just inside flickering lamps and ghoulish effigies convey a suitably fearful atmosphere. Once within, the queue for the main haunt has a radio soundtrack from Rookmere village, with announcements about the tour you’re about to undertake. The story unfolds, with the aid of your initial tour guide, seeing you opt to take a heritage tour of the historic Rookmere, including the flooded lock canals beneath. But be warned: whilst… Read More…

Special Effects7.45

The world within “Lock 13” has a good variety of effects and sets that energise this watery world of horrors. Music is cinematic and swollen, with sets charting many different environments. Tunnels with foliage dripping from them stretch forth at confusing angles, and once you reach the lock itself water gushes from pipes in huge torrents – indeed, you might get a little misted. In certain other areas, an unplaceable smell of foulness penetrated our nostrils and suggests the fetid evil that lurks here. Whilst these tunnels are the focus, other rooms are well established and help build the universe.… Read More…

Characters7.75

The village of Rookmere is wonderfully populated, with plenty of hostile and screaming residents. We thought that the welcome from our tour guide was particularly strong and booming, as was the museum curator, and even the queue attendant who played in it all. Sometimes, actors would sneak behind you and menacingly corner you with dark speech, occasionally grabbing at you erratically. One of us even had his face caressed and held. The characters here in the main are villagers, and many wore simple robes in the latter parts of the maze, cult-like silhouettes cutting through the light. Makeup is applied… Read More…

Scare Factor7.46

The most frightening moments in Walsall Scare Maze came from attacks and grabs that were completely unexpected. Because actors can touch you here, the menace that you initially feel in talking to them about what they perceive as your invasion of their “perfect village” quickly crosses the border into physical threat. Sometimes, the villagers would creep between one of us and replace us in the line, giving a jump to the person in front when they whispered in your ear. And it’s not just actors providing scares, with the jolts of the malfunctioning lift eliciting several screams in our group.… Read More…

Value8.17

Walsall Scare Maze clocks in at just over a minute per pound for the experience, at around a 25-minute walkthrough at the cost of £24.80. The world the Walsall team have created is expansive, and gushes out into the entertainment space, which acts as a great space to linger both before and after your experience. A shop carries all manners of wares, and you can also acquire a photograph to commemorate your experience or watch yourself on the numerous concealed cameras throughout the maze afterwards. One feature being introduced this year is the ability for your friends to take part… Read More…
