Summary

Happy 2026 season! We found ourselves making the trip to Rockford for one of the most unique haunted house experiences in our area. Twisted Crypt has been serving up scares in its hometown for some time. It baffles me how many conversations we have with locals who have yet to make their way over, but here is our attempt at a convincing argument for everyone to make their way to visit the Duson family during their reunion.

Guest Experience9.45

Twisted Crypt is in a shopping center and easy to spot. The haunt is well known in Rockford and the surrounding area. All information pertaining to the haunt is readily available on their website and on social media platforms. There is plenty of free parking around the haunt. The ticket booth is lit up and located right at the front of the building. There is a covered line, both indoors and outdoors. The setup is extremely organized. There are local police and a strong security presence on site to ensure both guests and actors are safe. Event staff are readily… Read More…

Immersion8.98

Before entering the building, music plays while actors entertain the queue line. A food truck is on site, offering bites and beverages. Inside the building, the façade of the home the family occupies can be seen through the thick, ominous fog. The bright full moon is also quite eerie. The highly detailed mummified bodies hanging on the walls are far from comforting. The characters who occupied the rooms used their space to tell a story very well. We were sent to look for Smitty to get the “ingredients” for dinner, which turned out to be a trap to take our… Read More…

Special Effects8.87

The SFX produced at Twisted Crypt are consistently impressive. They use a mix of hand-built scenes, locally purchased props, and other high-end props. One of the new scenes added to the walkthrough is the butcher room. It fits in with the backwoods people feel the haunt immersion is implying and includes some tough visuals via old meatpacking plant footage. The moment we stepped into the room, the scent in the air replicated rotting meat and was triggering enough; however, it is a cherry on top given all other aspects in this scene. One of the main staples of Twisted Crypt… Read More…

Characters9.02

The actors at Twisted Crypt provide every guest with a unique and personal experience. Each character feels as though they belong to their environment. The theme, of course, is the Duson family, which is a backwoods family. Not only do they look the part, but they smell the part in many instances. When walking through, it is as though they made us part of their story through tasks we were given as we proceeded through each scene. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted by Shannon and Mama before we made it to the ticket booth, both eagerly awaiting… Read More…

Scare Factor8.74

The attraction is dialogue- and story-driven. Different from a traditional haunt, Twisted Crypt keeps guests in several scenes for a longer period. This creates space between groups. We have yet to run into any other groups inside the haunt, giving us a more immersive feel. Depending on what room we are in, characters provoke a darker tone or set up for a scare in an upcoming scene. Their dialogue and room utilization work well to make us constantly feel on edge. A lot of the scares thrive on dialogue and the content of what the actor is saying, as well… Read More…

Value8.24

Every year, Twisted Crypt proves it is worth the drive from the Chicagoland area. With yearly changes and distinctive character placements, it’s worth multiple visits throughout the season to see a unique experience with alternating actors. We cannot wait to see what other family secrets come out throughout the years.
