Summary

Many years ago, on a warm summer evening, the USS William S. Mitchell broke free from its moorings and drifted helplessly down the river. Along its path stood four bridges, each one a devastating obstacle in the ship’s uncontrolled descent. As the vessel collided with the bridges, its hull was ravaged, and water began pouring in. When the wreckage was finally recovered and rescue crews were dispatched, they would discover a horrifying scene: all 60 passengers aboard had perished. The tragedy would forever be remembered as the Mitchell Massacre. For decades, the USS Nightmare has haunted the Cincinnati metro area,… Read More…

Guest Experience9.63

Before our visit, we checked the USS Nightmare’s website for information about the haunt. Everything we needed, including operating dates and hours, directions, and parking information, was easily accessible. The website even featured a video and a brief write-up detailing the vessel’s backstory. After entering the address into our GPS, we were directed straight to the designated parking area. Located along the riverfront in Newport, Kentucky, the haunt benefits from plenty of nearby parking options, including street parking and several parking garages. The ticket booth was well-lit, with clearly labeled lanes directing guests to the appropriate queue based on their… Read More…

Just the sight of this mangled, rusted, ghastly vessel is enough to send a chill down your spine! Setting the mood instantly with an unforgettable first impression, the ill-fated ship sits ominously docked along the banks of the Ohio River. Emblazoned on its port-side wheel cover is a skeletal captain, serving as both a warning and a grim preview of what awaits those who dare to come aboard. A massive inflatable skull looms overhead, glowing eerily as flames shoot from a smokestack toward the bow. The vessel beckons visitors to enter its cursed hull, where they risk becoming trapped forever,… Read More…

Special Effects8.41

For many years, the USS Nightmare has stayed true to its roots, delivering fear through a combination of classic and original special effects. When it comes to scene design, they certainly don’t cut corners! Intricate and elaborate sets decorate the entire length of the ship, with each room packed full of gross, grotesque props and detailed set pieces. The lighting is particularly effective, working beautifully with the vessel’s naturally dark interior to create an ominous atmosphere. Against the ship’s blackened surroundings, strategically placed red lights cast an especially sinister glow, making each scene feel even more sinister. Taking full advantage… Read More…

The haunted vessel’s demented crew was some of the best we’ve seen in recent years! Not only was the cast impressive in numbers, but their overall appearance and presentation felt much more complete. The makeup and costuming were more fleshed out and cohesive with the various themes throughout the ship. Masks were used far less frequently, and for good reasons, as the crew is meant to represent the human forces who perished in the wreckage. Overall, we were pleasantly surprised by the improvements to the costuming, though we’d still love to see some more fully developed looks in the future.… Read More…

Scare Factor8.4

The USS Nightmare was originally constructed as a dredging vessel, designed to collect white lies from the bottom of the river. Decades later, it serves a similar purpose under the command of its sinister captain: dredging the fear straight from your soul! From the moment you step aboard until the second you leave, the vessel and its undead crew do a phenomenal job of setting the tone and keeping the experience alive. The pacing is well maintained, with a steady stream of actors and animatronics keeping you on your toes. They don’t simply rely on popping out of the shadows… Read More…

On the night of our visit, general admission was $33, while adding the RIP experience brought our total ticket price to $48. With a combined runtime of 44 minutes, our MPD (minutes per dollar spent) came to 0.92, just shy of our 1.0 benchmark. However, there’s still plenty of bang for your buck here! The RIP experience adds nearly 15 minutes to your time inside the haunt through escape games and other interactive features. We’d recommend experiencing this option with a larger group, as some of the puzzles can be complicated and must be completed within a limited amount of… Read More…
