Final Score: 7.64

We returned to Maris Farms Haunted Woods after a few years away and were curious to see what had changed since our last visit. This remains one of the longest haunted attractions in the region, taking us about 27 minutes to complete the outdoor trail through cornfields and wooded sections. Along the way, we passed through a mix of new and reimagined scenes, including a macabre Alice in Wonderland tea party, a neon clown carnival, Santa’s workshop, and the encampment in the bayou.

The path felt well-paced, with each section offering something distinct. The midway was quieter the night we visited, though it still featured a beer garden, a mini donut stand, and a small farm store. Line entertainment came from sliders and a few roaming clowns, including a familiar Pennywise, making his rounds holding a red balloon.

Maris Farms Haunted Woods continues to deliver an outdoor haunt rooted in classic scares with a delicious mix of creativity and atmosphere that rewards its long trek through the fields.

Cast: 8

1. Did it seem like there were enough actors? (25% of score): 8

2. How creative, believable, convincing were they? (35% of score): 8

4. Was there a good variety of characters (behavior)? (20% of score): 8

The cast at Maris Farms Haunted Woods brought consistent energy and strong timing throughout the trail. While there were a few small sections that could have used another actor, most scenes felt well covered and active. The performers clearly knew how to pace themselves, moving efficiently between groups and landing their scares without rushing.

This cast showed a solid mix of aggression and playfulness. Some went for the pop scare while others leaned into theatrical performances that carried their scenes. Leatherface’s quiet menace in his sewing room at the Crystal Lake Resort and the contorting victim in the padded plexiglass cell both stood out as two very different interactions.

Several performers brought humor to the experience. The clowns were quick with quips, with one teasing a member of our group that “[this] is not for you, old man.” While the Alice in Wonderland crew offered clever banter: Alice urging us to “paint the roses red,” the Red Queen demanding proper bows, and the Mad Hatter leading a round of nonsensical logic that left us laughing …and confused. The Sweeney Todd actor was also great, delivering rhyming lines while brandishing his straight razor as he led us deeper into his shop.

Across the board, timing was impressive. Even with the steady flow of guests, actors managed to reset quickly and hit each group cleanly. Between the recognizable characters, victims, and animated clowns, this was one of the most consistently engaged casts we’ve seen at Maris Farms.

Costuming: 8.2

5. How complete, unique, detailed were the costumes, accessories? (35% of score): 8

6. Were the masks, makeup creative, detailed, realistic? (30% of score): 8

7. How appropriate were the costumes for the respective scenes, themes? (20% of score): 9

8. How believable-, detailed-looking were the queue actors? (See Note if N/A) (15% of score): 8

Costuming at Maris Farms Haunted Woods was consistent and thoughtfully matched to each scene. The characters looked appropriately weathered, bloodied, or fantastical, depending on their setting, with nothing feeling out of place. The haunt relied more on makeup than masks this year, with both being durable and effective under the low lighting.

Pennywise, featured prominently in the haunt’s promotions, appeared in a full silicone mask and a detailed costume that felt true to the character. Other recognizable figures, like Jason in the Crystal Lake section and Santa in his workshop, also fit well into their scenes. The Mad Hatter’s eccentric outfit and the film-accurate design of the Babadook stood out to us. Even smaller roles, like the bayou folk or victims in transition scenes, were dressed with intention. Costumes looked rugged enough to handle the outdoor trail in the Pacific Northwest.

16. How well did the "vibe" flow after, between the attraction/s? (15% of score): 4

The queue at Maris Farms Haunted Woods remains long even with timed ticketing, but line entertainment helped keep the wait from feeling unbearable. Most of the performers were clown sliders, including a bubbly, chatty character who worked the line and the iconic Pennywise moving among the crowd. Halloween-themed music played in the background, adding to the mood. The long barn, near the front of the line, was well decorated, giving us a chance to take photos and soak in the atmosphere before entering the trail. Outside the haunt, there weren’t many additional activities or attractions. The beer garden, mini donut stand, and farm store offered simple onsite options, but nothing particularly screamed, “this is a haunt.” Mostly, the farm landscape primarily served as a transition toward the trail.

Special Effects: 6.5

17. How effective were the sound effects? (20% of score): 7

18. How realistic were the scene designs, details? (30% of score): 7

19. How effective, realistic were the props, animatronics? (30% of score): 6

20. How well did they use creative, special, sensory effects? (20% of score): 6

Maris Farms Haunted Woods featured a few well-constructed scenes with detailed props that enhanced our visit. The haunt began and ended with long hotel corridors featuring the names of famous horror movie villains, setting a kind of theme for the trail. The bayou shacks were impressively detailed, and the cornfields and scarecrows created a classic outdoor haunt vibe. One standout moment involved passing a plexiglass-padded cell, which added an unexpected interactive element. Other memorable props included Sweet Tooth’s ice cream truck from Twisted Metal and the macabre barber chair scene with Sweeney Todd, where we were sprayed with water right as Sweeney went to slit a poor victim’s throat.

Lighting was used thoughtfully to define each scene. Blacklight in the clown section made neon details stand out, the wooden stairs leading out of the forest glowed red, and the bayou area was bathed in green, helping us navigate the environment. Sound effects were present throughout, adding subtle cues and atmosphere, but much of the tension came from the actors themselves, whose actions often drew the loudest screams from each group. The careful scene design and props created a cohesive and engaging experience that allowed the actors and costumes to shine.

The Scare Factor: 8

21. How scary was it? (35% of score): 8

22. How well did they provide scares to everyone in the group? (15% of score): 8

23. How predictable were the scares? (25% of score): 8

24. How well did they provide a wide variety (types) of scares? (10% of score): 8

25. How strong was the ending / finale? (15% of score): 8

We encountered a varied mix of scares throughout the night. A standout moment was the padded room scene, where an actor bent backward against the plexiglass and slammed their hands down, delivering a genuine startle that caught our whole group off guard. Other scenes combined atmospheric tension with strong character work in the dimly lit forest paths. The eccentric interactions from the Alice in Wonderland characters kept us on edge even when nothing jumped out immediately… Well, almost nothing jumped out at us.

While some sections had fewer actors than others, which slightly reduced the intensity, the haunt maintained a steady rhythm of surprises interspersed with quieter moments. The mix of clever pop scares and playful banter made our experience feel busy from start to finish. By the time we exited, we were laughing breathlessly while trying to describe our favorite moments. The haunt left us fully entertained with a balance of fright and fun that carried all the way through the trail.

Entertainment & Value: 6.75

26. How satisfied with the entertainment provided by the MAIN attraction/s? (50% of score): 8

27. How satisfied with OTHER entertainment INCLUDED with the ticket price? (25% of score): 4

28. How appropriate is/are the ticket price/s? (25% of score): 7

Admission was $44 per person for a general admission ticket, and the haunt itself took about 27 minutes to complete. That places the minutes per dollar ratio on the higher end compared to many attractions in the Pacific Northwest, especially considering the outdoor setting and the length of the trail. Beyond the haunt, a small beer garden, mini donut stand, and farm store provided some opportunities to relax, grab a snack, and soak in the atmosphere. Seasonal decor, photo op displays, and the natural charm of a farm in fall added extra enjoyment both before and after the walkthrough. While repeat visitors may recognize some of the core scenes, the refreshed layouts, new sections such as the Alice in Wonderland tea party, and the consistent attention from staff make the experience feel renewed and worth returning for. By the end of the night, we were left entertained and sharing stories about the most memorable scares.
